The Impact of Global Learning
"You do not need to rely on teachers, your experiences as a learner with teach you all you need to know."
The Global Learning Medallion program has allowed me to not only explore what it means to be a global citizen, but find ways in which I can be more #WorldsAhead. Through this program, I have been able to network and make real connections with community partners, faculty, staff, future and current leaders, locally and around the world, in order to gain more perspective on the world around me and be more aware of how everything is interconnected.
I gained more global perspective as a result of both of my international experiences, where I developed greater knowledge about different cultures. My international experiences have helped me grow and develop a better understanding of myself and my values as well as my tolerance for ambiguity in a variety of situations. I have an increased capacity to profit from my mistakes and have become more aware of the way I use and structure time. Additionally, I think more critically: I am more discriminating and skeptical, I recognize the importance I put on developing my skills and talents, and I have made an effort to surround myself with diverse individuals to challenge my ability to be more flexible and open-minded. Studying abroad contributed to greater awareness of the opportunities in life that are open to me, my increased willingness to take on roles and tasks to which I am unaccustomed, and the importance I place on having personal fulfillment in my work.
I became more globally aware not only through participation in study abroad and the different programs and events offered on campus, but through some global learning courses as well. Intercultural and interracial communications taught me greatly about how culture influences communication, how to determine when cultural issues are influencing communication and understanding the role of communication in intercultural adaptation. Global media and society taught me about the interrelatedness of international media characteristics as they manifest in various globalized content and localized content.
For my global engagement project, I worked as the Chief of Staff for a non-profit organization called Before It’s Too Late to leverage arts, technology and science to ignite urgency and collaboration toward addressing climate change. Through this organization, I learned more about how omnipresent of a issue climate change is not only in the world, but specifically in Miami as it is ground zero. I gained problem solving and creative thinking skills working for this organization because it forced me to think outside of the box as to how exactly we were going to reach our goal of 1 million actions, and find strategies for how we would engage others to join us in our movement.
I will be sure to use all the skills I have gained from participating in this program in my everyday life and in my profession. After graduation, I will be moving to Denver, Colorado to serve as an AmeriCorps Member for City Year where I hope to leave a legacy in which I am remembered not by my status on Earth, but by the impact I left in the hearts of others and the ability to empower myself by empowering under resources communities. My goal is to inspire kids and young adults to dream big, and to provide them with the support and resources necessary to persevere and be successful. Hopefully, I can use the skills I gain to advance and prosper in nonprofit organizations in the future.

The only way to come to a full acceptance and understanding of yourself is to embrace your own culture, quirks and differences while learning about those around you and exploring, incorporating and embracing their cultures, differences, quirks, etcetera. |
